Thanks for visiting us to learn about our work with rural Andean young women.

While rural women’s educational needs and dilemmas have repeatedly been discussed, and numerous governmental programs created, more than one and a half million female students living in rural areas in Perú still face daunting obstacles throughout their educational experiences.

Studies on young rural women found that one in four had already dropped out of school. Late enrollment into school, grade level repetition, low academic performance, poverty conditions, a curriculum distant to their socio-cultural reality, and multiple responsibilities at home and in the field make it difficult for them to finish school.

Even though the educational opportunities have increased for everyone, there are still differences between women and men’s ability to access those opportunities. Data from the country show that women generally reach only 7.8 years of schooling, compared to 9.5 years of schooling for men. As a whole, rural areas show a lower average, and women are consistently the most vulnerable group.
